Introduced for 1994 model year, BMW’s R1100R fit in between tourer, sportbike and dualsport machine. Sporting the same 1085cc flat twin “boxer engine”, the “Oilhead” (oil-cooled head, air-cooled cylinders) gave a torquey 90bhp. The engine became a stressed member reducing the frame weight, while front suspension received a total redesign to a revolutionary “telelever” set up, whereby the legs of a conventional telescopic fork connected to a pivoting wishbone controlled by a single coil-sprung damper unit below the steering head. This transformed the bike’s handling by adding to the already comfortable ride with a “sit down” pose under hard cornering for sportbike-embarrassing results. Under this architecture, the braking forces are taken back horizontally minimizing conventional ‘fork dive’ under braking. Upped to 1,130cc for 2001 for the R1150R with additional power and torque, the model ran until 2006.
The 2002 BMW R1150R on offer here hails from a Utah collector. It was purchased by him from ClassicAvenue.com with 2,800 miles from new. Prior ownership was a California-based substantial collection of American and European bikes. A barn-find when discovered, the bike was stored for the decade or more, having covered less than 2,800 miles from new. It was liberated in 2019, cleaned and detailed and given a full re-commissioning, including fluid change, new battery, fuel pump and general service to the fuel and spark systems. Sincer purchase, our vendor recently fully serviced the bike with new alternator belt and oil and filter change this year, new tires front and rear about 1400 miles ago, and tells us all outstanding recalls and service bulletins have been completed. Cosmetically, the bike is in excellent condition throughout. Very minor wear is present from a bike stored for that length of time, but it’s negligible. It runs perfectly. Starting easily, all systems of brakes and suspension work as if the bike has just rolled out of the showroom.
