A V-twin. Dependable. Reliable. A heavyweight with lots of torque. No wonder it has been called “Italy’s Harley-Davidson”, although the engine was turned through 90 degrees. The company’s inception dates back to 1921, at the helm were two pilots and a mechanic from the Italian Airforce.
After a long and varied career in all aspects of motorcycling, the company presented the 750cc Ambassador and 850cc Eldorado to the market. A strong road presence, great comfort for hours in the saddle, V-Twin power, Italian handling and style: no wonder it became a favourite of the stylish and much-televised Los Angeles Police Department and California Highway Patrol. Many of these machines remained in the area after their civic duty and these de-mobbed machines needed some expert care. One of the country’s best-known shops specializing in the rehab of old Guzzis is Cycle Garden, based in Huntington Beach. It is from the private collection of the guys at Cycle Garden that this machine was purchased by our vendor.
The shop went through the bike, rebuilding the engine with a 950cc big-bore kit, the transmission and all cycle parts, including wheels. An ex-LAPD bike, it retains the original and correct dash, switches and lighting, as well as the hugely desirable original siren. Serviced prior to sale, the bike ran perfectly. Our vendor’s confidence in it ran to a 1000-mile tour around Northern California. Since then, it has remained in fine tune, on display in a climate-controlled environment, and continues to run well.
