Mercedes’ C300 is a stylish, well-mannered, V6-powered four-door sedan familiar to everyone as a family mover, serviceable and “reliable appliance”-like. Then AMG got hold of it. They lowered it, stretched it sideways, put aerodynamic elements on it, and various other meaner and muscular additions, and then gave it a lump in the middle of the hood. That’s because they squeezed in a hand built 6.2 liter V8, shoving 451bhp out and tire-shredding 443 lb ft of torque.
Step on the loud pedal and all hell breaks loose. You and the small child strapped in the kid’s seat in the back are compressed into the seat as you pass the 62mph mark in just 4.5 seconds and on to a restricted, yes, restricted 173mph. All with a bassline of music festival levels.
There are other party tricks as well. The SpeedShift-Plus seven-speed manumatic transmission includes a new double de-clutching feature on downshifts to maintain vehicle balance during cornering. The three modes — S (Sport), C (Comfort) and M (Manual) — differ in their shift characteristics and speed. Shifts in S mode are around 30% faster than in C, and 50% faster in M. Then there is the new three-stage Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with a Sport function, a first for AMG models. The ESP button in the center console allows the driver to choose among three modes: on, sport and off, with decreasing levels of electronic handling and traction intervention.
The car on offer has been enjoyed by its present owner for several years. A questionably mature car and motorcycle enthusiast, he has maintained the car impeccably. I would sugeest, more like “babied” it. With only 63,000 miles on the odometer, the car is fresh from a comprehensive A-1 service, including transmission, air filters, oil and fluid change. It also received new motor mounts and a set of lovely Nitto NT555G2 tires on scuff-free wheels.
The condition is superb. Cosmetically, the car is excellent with minimal wear to the paint and interior surfaces. Free of any accident history, paint or bodywork repair, this original car presents perfectly. It features 10-way power-adjustable front seats with three-position memory, aluminum studded pedals, auto-dimming mirrors, electronic compass, heated front seats, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, power tilt and telescopic steering column, split-folding rear seats, bird’s-eye maple wood trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, power windows, mirrors and door locks, MP3-compatible, in-dash six-CD changer with AM/FM/weatherband radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth integration, integrated garage door opener, dual front, front side and window curtain air bags and they oh-so-cool, motorized rear window shade.
Future classic: possibly. Modern classic: definitely. Naturally aspirated, monster engines are becoming a thing of the past. Here’s a low-mileage, immaculate example.
