1996 Honda NSR250R SP Project

Honda designed and built a succession of bikes to satisfy the Japanese obsession with 2-stroke race replicas. First came the 3-cylinder, MVX250 in 1984, followed by the equally short-lived NS250. But by 1987, they had the formula down and introduced the NSR250. Powered by a liquid-cooled, reed valve 249cc 90° V-twin incorporating Honda’s RC-Valve power valve, a la the factory HRC racers. Winning races on Sunday started with the Honda-riding 7-times World 250 champion, Freddie Spencer. Sales on Monday came with the ultimate race replica, the MC28 NSR250SP.

It sported 40bhp, a dry clutch, adjustable suspension, Magtek wheels, PGM-IV ignition and Pro-Arm single sided swingarm, all in a neat 137kg package. It also featured a unique memory card “key”. Production ran for 12 years until 1999.

The motorbike offered

1996 Honda NSR250R SP on offer here was part of a collection of interesting 2- and 4-wheeled machines. On static display for some time, it was treated to a recommissioning, including a carb clean, and check through the spark system. However, it developed an issue with the card “key” and now will not turn on.

This would be an excellent project for a budding ultimate diminutive 2-stroke racer fan.
