1984 Honda CB1100F Super Bol D’Or

Honda moved the goal posts in 1968 with the introduction of the CB750, the world’s first production multi-cylinder superbike. But then, not a lot happened. Kawasaki jumped in with the 900cc Z1, followed by Suzuki and scrambling British manufacturers. It wasn’t until the late 1970s that Honda upped their game with twin cam 750s, adding 4 valves per cylinder, then 900cc examples and then the “cc wars” were on. Now, 1100cc was the benchmark of the modern superbike with offerings from Suzuki and Kawasaki to compete with Honda’s CB1100F and its 16-valve, twin-cam air-cooled inline-4 offering 110bhp to propel it to about 140mph.

Honda’s focus in racing was on the endurance racing class of the mid 1970s on. They achieved great success in races such as the Bol d’Or, so, of course, the trophy wins were reflected in model releases in all their capacities: CB750, 900 and 1100. Although available in all markets from 1982 through 1984, the “Super Bol D’Or edition 1100 was not offered in the US. The riding position was sportier than the US model with rearset footpegs and controls as well as lower two-piece clip-on handlebars. These race-oriented parts were offered through US dealers as a complete “sport kit”, and now command a price premium in the US for CB1100 F enthusiasts.
