After a one-year production run for the 1980 YZ50G, Yamaha upped the engine displacement on its popular mini-motocrosser when the YZ60H was introduced in 1981. With its 58cc reed-valve-inducted, two-stroke, single-cylinder engine and six-speed transmission, the YZ60 delivered impressive performance and big-bike components in a diminutive package. Equipped with a single-shock, Mono-X rear suspension and beefy, leading-axle front forks with a full 150mm of travel, the YZ60 had an unusual frame design with its rear engine mount also serving as the swingarm pivot, which minimized horsepower loss through the drive sprocket. With the YZ60 in its lineup, Yamaha offered a total of six different YZ models in 1981.
The 1981 Yamaha YZ60 on offer here comes from a Southern California collection. In original condition, the bike was just checked for basic mechanical condition, including compression, to ready it for sale. It was recommissioned with attention to the fuel and spark systems and now runs well. It veritably screams along, genuinely a fast motorcycle regardless of its stature – a truly competitive machine for the younger or diminutive motocrosser.
