1980 Ducati Darmah 900 SSD Desmo

The launch of Ducati in to the large capacity motorcycle market started in the late 1960s, but met a pivotal point with the famed Daytona win in 1972. Following capacity increases from Honda, Kawasaki, Triumph and Suzuki, the firm introduced the “square case” V-Twin of 864cc. The new engine featured many internal improvements around the oil pump, cams and electronic ignition, and now shifting was moved to the left-hand side to cater to the all-important American market. It didn’t take long for electric starting to be added.

A bit of a cumbersome design, the 860GT was succeeded by the far more stylish, typically lithe, Leo Tartarini-deigned Darmah range in 1977. Build quality was much improved by using a mixture of Bosch, Lucas and Nippon Denso electrics and controls. Alongside stablemates 900SS and Mike Hailwood replica, the Darmah fit in perfectly.

The motorbike offered

The 1980 Ducati Darmah 900 SS Desmo on offer here comes from a Southern California collector. Purchased in 2019, the bike had been treated to a full mechanical overhaul with a freshly rebuilt engine. With no miles added to the bike it changed hands to the present owner, who put it on static display in his collection. Deeming the paint to be a little tired, it was repainted to a very high standard including the pinstriping.

As can be seen in the video, the bike starts and runs well with strong power delivery and a taut feel.
