1976 Bultaco 250cc Pursang Mk9

One of the legendary stories in motorcycling is the split of founding members of Montesa, when Francisco Xavier Bulto resigned to pursue the production of racing motorcycles for the street rather than partner Pedro Permanyer’s ethos to built street motorcycles capable of racing. Bulto left in 1958, taking most of the racing department with him to set up a new company – Bultaco.

It took barely a year to introduced their first 125cc machine and of no surprise that a racing programme was introduced shortly thereafter, successfully entering a team in the roadster class at the 1959 Spanish Grand Prix. Trials and moto-cross models followed in the mid-1960s, the first Pursang scrambler appearing at the start of the 1965 season.

Jim Pomeroy, champion motocrosser, made the name Pursang famous with his wins in AMA Pro Motocross, but also in the Spanish Motocross GP in 1973. He not only became the first American to win a Gran Prix on a Spanish bike, but also the youngest rider to win a World Championship Motocross Grand Prix and the first rider to win this type of event in his debut race! Bultaco made the best of it and in 1975 a “Pomeroy Replica” was in the Bultaco line-up.

The motorbike offered

The 1976 Bultaco 250cc Pursang Mk9 offered here comes from a collection of off-road machines from the 1960s and ‘70s. In fine, restored condition, the bike has been on static display since purchase, so will need the usual recommissioning of the fuel and spark systems before returning to the offroad playgrounds around the country.
