1976 BMW 1000cc R90/6

The BMW ‘/6’ series arrived in October 1973, as a much more sportily styled machine than the outgoing ‘/5’s, boasting new side-panels and silencers, and totally restyled controls and instruments and an all-important 5-speed ‘box attached to the 898cc engine.

The motorbike offered

The 1976 BMW 898CC R90/6 on offer here has been through a full custom treatment. Purchased in 2018, the bike was dismantled, and the work began. At its heart is a Scottie Sharpe rebuilt, 1,000cc Siebenrock big-bore kitted original engine finished in black with a rebuilt 5-speed gearbox and clutch rebuilt by Eddie at Boxer 2 Valve in Watsonville California. Heads were vapor blasted, and air/fuel mixture is courtesy of dual 38mm Dell’Orto carburetors while the exhaust headers were heat-wrapped and after the cross-over pipe are twin Hoske 38mm black chrome mufflers.

This drivetrain was mounted in a freshly powder coated frame. The rest of the cycle parts were then attended to with subframe, rims, hubs, brake calipers, and numerous other parts powder-coated glossy black. The rims were disassembled and re-assembled using stainless steel spokes and nipples. All fasteners were replaced with stainless steel. At the front, the forks were rebuilt, powder-coating them to match the rest of the bike, while Hagon shocks were installed at the rear. Braking is from upgraded dual cross-drilled discs up front fitted with stainless Spiegler brake lines, while the standard drum brake is at the rear. Stainless steel axles are installed at both ends, and the bike rolls on new Dunlop tires.

Joker Machine clip-on handlebars and bar-end mirrors with new BMW controls surround an OSHMO top triple clamp that houses a 200-km/h Motogadget Moto Scope speedometer. A black powder-coated headlight bucket houses a yellow tinted headlight.

The exquisite paint on the tank was applied by Ryan Smith of Boss Moto, Sacramento at a cost of over $2,000.

Although there is no odometer, the vendor reports approximately 400 miles have been enjoyed since completion of this stylish retro custom.
