Description
1974 Ducati 750 Sport
Ducati had seen enormous success through the 1950s and ‘60s with diminutive and elegant roadracing-styled motorcycles. But to expand and compete with the onslaught from Japan, they had to introduce larger capacity machines. Their foray into the market came with the 750GT in 1971. Designed by the legendary Fabio Taglioni on a traditionally tight budget, it was essentially two of the company’s bevel-drive overhead-cam singles on a common crankcase set at a 90-degree angle. The engine was smooth and powerful with strong torque and its fine handling characteristics notched wins on the street and on the tract, most famously with Paul Smart’s victory at Imola in 1972.
Based on the original 750 GT tourer, the 750 Sport was an altogether more exciting looking thing and backed up its stunning looks with improved performance courtesy of a maximum power hike from 50 to 56bhp. It was only sold in the striking yellow livery and only until 1974 and in very limited numbers, 1,625 to be precise, 200 of which were imported to the US.
