1974 BMW R90S

After the release of the game changing CB750 multi-cylinder superbike from Honda, an onslaught of superbikes came thick and fast from British, Italian and other Japanese manufacturers. BMW’s entry into the foray came with the 1973 ‘/6’ range of a pair of 900cc in touring and more sporty guise. The R90S, with twin front disc brakes, racing seat, megaphone exhausts, bikini fairing and sexy smoke or Daytona Orange finish paint job looked like no other BMW. And the hand-crafted paint finish meant that no two were identical.

To back up the staggering cosmetics, was a 67bhp boxer twin, which could propel the machine to 125mph and with BMW’s build quality and reliability, could hold it there all day.

In a “race on Sunday, sell on Monday” strategy, BMW entered (mostly legally) modified R90S’ in to the new United States AMA Superbike Championship, and won in 1976 by British rider Reg Pridmore.

The motorbike offered

This fine example of the 1974 BMW R90S in smoke grey livery, was acquired from the famed Mitzel Motorcycle Collection. A Canadian import, the bike shows 41,403 kms or 25,670 miles on the odometer, belived to be original. It features BMW pannier locking luggage set, dual front hydraulic drilled discs with rear drum brakes, spoke wheels and polished dual exhaust and silencers. Fresh from a recommissioning, which included a new battery, fluid changes, flush of the fuel system, full carb clean and a check through the spark system. All system work on the bike and it is a true pleasure to ride. It starts easily and feels taut and confidence inspiring. Fly in and ride it home…
