In a bid to compete with the post-war onslaught of small European motorcycles of a more sporting disposition, Harley-Davidson introduced the K-models in 1952, that became known as the Sportsters. They featured foot shift, hand clutch and swing arm rear suspension, and then eventually roller bearing crank, polished ports, and hot cams for the 1955 KHK. For ’57, they gained overhead valve and became the XL model, and officially became the Sportster. The line expanded in 1958 with the addition of the XLH and the XLCH, the higher performance versions.
The 1969 Harley-Davidson 883cc XLH Sportster on offer here comes from a Southern California collector. Purchased from an estate, this marvelously original, California black license plated machine was then thoroughly recommissioned, cleaned and detailed. The carbs were rebuilt, fluids changed and a new battery and now, in fine running condition, the bike is offered in good riding condition. With the rare touring option of panniers in, also in excellent original condition, the bike is poised for the next classic tour.
