Following a foray in to the sportscar market with the Corvette and Thunderbird, the American motorcar industry turned in to a cage fight of competing muscle car models. With the Malibu SS 396 in 1965, Chevrolet finally had a viable contender and by 1966 it became a full-fledged model with three versions of the 396 V8.
For 1968, the Chevelle SS 396 continued to exploit and refine Chevrolet’s formula for a handsome performance car with an engine that knew no bounds. The Chevelle was all-new for 1968 with semi-fastback styling and shortened wheelbase. It featured Hide-A-Way windshield wipers, special twin-domed hood, and black-accented trim with body side moldings, black grille and tail panel.
Purchased a few years ago, this restored 1968 Chevelle SS is offered in its original color scheme of Butternut Yellow with Black interior. The car retains its original 325bhp 396ci V8 mated to an original automatic gearbox and features a 12-bolt rear end with 3.08 gearing, all original glass, but for the windshield, power brakes with discs at the front, power steering, Rally wheels and original date-coded seat belts. Included in the sale is the original sales contract and the all-important Protect-O-Plate.
As per the Trim Tag, the car was built in the second week of June in the Fremont, California assembly plant and is confirmed as a Model 13837 or 2-door Sport Coupé, 5-passenger.
The original sales receipt confirms that the car was originally sold on August 28th, 1968, to Sarah Justin of Van Nuys, California and featured radio, tinted glass, automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, and AC options. She paid a princely sum of $3,937.00.
Now, with an indicated 43,153 miles, the car is offered for sale in excellent condition. An original California rust-free example, the paint has great lustre and depth of shine, with good brightwork and glass all around. The windshield was replaced with a correct, tinted replacement. The correctly redone interior is very good with original patina to the dash and panels. The car starts easily, idles smoothly, and has strong power from the 325bhp 396. It shifts through all gears, brakes and steers as it should.
