In the early 1950s, BMW concentrated on refining what were essentially pre-war designs, but by 1955 was ready with a model line-up of 494cc R50 and 594cc R60Â machines. They inherited the up-dated engine introduced on the R51/3 but deployed this in all-new cycle parts featuring an Earles-type leading-link front fork and swinging-arm rear suspension enclosing the driveshaft in the right leg. The twins continued with only minor changes and then in August 1960 an entirely new and much improved engine was announced, the ‘500’ continuing as the R50/2 while the ‘600’ became the R69S.
This stunning ’67 R50/2 was purchased by our vendor, a very accomplished amateur restorer, who we have sold numerous machines from. It was acquired from the second owner in Pasadena, California, where it had been parked since 1980. A matching numbers and complete machine, it was a prime candidate for a ground-up restoration. Marque experts, Scottie’s Workshop, took on the project of a complete motor & gearbox rebuild. It was stripped down to the cases and walnut shell blasted, and then rebuilt with a NOS crank, new rods, shells sleeves, pistons, rings, valves, guides, springs, etc., while all bearings, seals, etc. were replaced. The gearbox only needed bearings and seals, as all gears and shafts were in excellent condition. A new clutch and all related components were installed. Vintage Beemer supplied all new parts to build up the cycle part of the bike and every part was refurbished or replaced to a truly excellent standard. Everything was painted perfectly in a special order car color, BMW White with black pinstriping.
Only 300-odd miles have been added to the odometer since restoration. Turn on the gas, push the key down, tickle the carbs and kick it to almost certain running on the very first attempt. The engine feels taut with excellent power delivery. The gears change with butter-smooth precision. And the brakes and suspension are confidence-inspiring. Everything works as it should. This is an excellent candidate for vintage touring or to show on the Concours circuit.
