1966 MV Agusta 49cc Germano Moped

MV was renowned for formidable racing machines, but then produced the odd moped, perfect for a run to the grocery store. With its pressed steel frame, bicycle-like styling, and 47.7cc engine, the Germano (Mallard) moped was not going to break many speed limits, and the parents of many teenagers were more than happy about that. Parts sourced from several outsider suppliers, the Germano was built to a price-point, yet it was infused with considerable MV flair. Also built to a weight goal of only 50kg, and powered by a DKW-sourced single-cylinder, 2-stroke affair, belting out 1.5 horsepower, is enough to fling the moped to 40 Km/h (24 mph). Prices started at 72,000 Lire, and the marketplace reacted by snapping up 4,508 of these stylish rides during the production span of 1964 -1968.

The Germano on offer here hails from a very substantial Northern California collector in fine condition. Purchased in 2014 from the famed Gary Kohs MV Collection as a restored machine, the older restoration has held up exceptionally well, and although generally in excellent condition, it is not perfectly fresh. On static display for a few years, the bike will need the usual re-commissioning before returning to safe road use.
