1968 Montesa 250cc Scorpion Road Racer

Spanish 2-strokes were going from strength to strength in the early ‘60s, fast becoming the bikes to beat in all the races in which they compete. The Montesa started life as a fairly good 125, then became a very good 125, then an equally good 175, and finally as an extremely good 250. Interestingly, all of this has been done with the same basic engine and motorcycle, so that what was a not-very light 125 has evolved into a 250 that is really very light indeed. In fact, even with all of the gusseting, etc., added for strength to match the added power, the 250 scrambler weighs only 224 pounds, full of fuel and ready to ride. In the mild-mannered Scorpion model, the engine produced 21bhp, but was easily tuned for 30bhp.

The motorbike offered

The 1968 Montesa 250cc Scorpion on offer here has been converted to road-racer specification under prior ownership. It was raced sparingly by a mature mechanic quite successfully in vintage events. It remained in excellent condition until being sold to our current seller, who purchased it for static display among his varied and diverse collection. Run upon purchase about 12 years ago, the bike will need the usual recommissioning before returning to the track.
