Description

1959 Royal Enfield 499cc ‘Big Head’ Bullet Project

Enfield had revived the Bullet name in 1948 for a sensational new 350 sports bike with swinging-arm rear suspension and following the prototypes’ debut in the Colmore Cup trial, the Bullet went on to achieve its first major success in the ISDT later in the year. The newcomer featured an overhead-valve engine that housed its dry-sump oil tank in a compartment in the rear of the crankcase, to which the four-speed gearbox was rigidly bolted in a form of ‘semi-unit’ construction. The Bullet could be had in road, trials or scrambles versions, with equipment and gearing to suit the application; there was even a racer in the mid-1950s. The 500cc Bullet first joined the range in 1953. When production of both Bullets ceased in 1962, the name passed to the 350cc version of the unitary construction Crusader 250.
