Description

First introduced in 1939, Moto Guzzi’s Airone production was interrupted by WWII, when the company turned to wartime manufacturing projects. Immediately after the cessation of hostilities, pre-war models from all manufacturers were hastily reintroduced, often with enhancements and updates. The Airone gained a telescopic front fork, larger diameter brakes and an aluminum-alloy cylinder barrel and ‘head.
The signature feature of the Airone is the external flywheel, which allows for proper rotational mass for effortless torque and smoothness at all revs, while keeping engine cases compact. Known as the “bacon/meat slicer”, the overhead valve 4-stroke 250cc engine proved to be durable in all states of tune. The Sport was available from 1949 and offered a heady 13bhp (50% over other models) affording a 70+ mph top speed. It featured aluminum rims, and sportier lower handlebars and rearset footpegs and controls.

The late model Airone offered here comes to us from a substantial collection of Italian 2, 3 and 4 wheeled machinery. An older restoration, the bike is in good mechanical condition. It starts easily, runs well and is a blast to ride with brisk performance. Cosmetically, the bike is in very presentable condition, but for the amateur pin-striping effort on the tank (see photos). The motorcycle comes with pump and original Italian logbook.

The Airone epitomizes beautiful Italian design, but with a reputation for reliability and deceptive performance, makes this offering a superb addition to any riding collection.
