1956 Moto Devil 175cc Formula 3 Prototype

Designed by Ing. Boninsegna and produced by precision-machining firm Officine Costruzioni Martinelli (O.C.M.A.) of Bergamo, Italy, the Moto Devil is a true rarity. The company first made gears for Fiat, but tried their hand at motorcycles in 1953. Produced were 123cc up to 244 cc two and four stroke blocks including a 173cc ohc racing version though the racing was not very successful. There was also a motorcycle with a 250 cc engine. In 1955 the Develino, a 48 cc moped, was produced with limited success. Their two-stroke models were similar to the MV Agusta 160, and the 175 four-stroke resembled the Parilla 175. The resulting lawsuits contributed to the end of the company by 1957.

You would have a “devil of a time” finding another example of this 1956 Moto Devil 175 race bike. Purported to be a one-off, this factory racer has sandcast crankcases, makes 20 horsepower, and is capable of more than 100 mph. This 1956 prototype racer is believed to be the only example of the 175 Formula 3 racer built.

Having been on static display in the MotoTalbott Museum in Carmel, California for some time, the bike has been re-commissioned to ready it for sale, but further fettling may be necessary before returning it to Giro-weapon status.
