Introduced in 1916, the Powerplus departed from previous engine design by using side-valve construction reducing the engine noise. With a 3-speed transmission and 17hp on tap from the 60ci engine, the machine was faster than the competition’s Twins, with a heady 60mph top speed.
The Powerplus proved to be hugely successful for the company, remaining part of the model lineup until 1924 and seeing duty at the hand of the US Army dispatch corps of World War I.
This highly original early-production Powerplus is believed to have been last painted prior to WWII. Upon close scrutiny, original paint is evident around the bike. The seat is in excellent original condition, while the original wheels are shod with period-correct Goodyear Diamond tires. According to the previous owner, collector Drew Lewis, approximately 20 years ago, the bike was mechanically re-commissioned by marque specialist, Mr. Lindsey of Ohio, and then maintained by Robinson Restorations. On static display for the last 15 years in a substantial private California collection, the bike remains in excellent original condition throughout with exquisite patina. The machine sports some fantastic and correct accessories, including and Old Sol headlamp and Corbin speedometer.
This is a fine opportunity to own a preservation class contender, or with some re-commissioning, a wonderful early tourer.
