Frame no. 171 4418
Engine no. 171 4418
Gilera enjoyed an amazing racing career throughout the early 1950s, taking six individual World Championships and five manufacturers’ titles. The publicity was imperative as they made Race on Sunday, sell on Monday the company mantra. The vast majority in sales were lightweight, small displacement machines based on the overhead-valve 125cc single cylinder bike that had first appeared in prototype form in 1948. As it developed, capacity increased, first to 150cc and then 175cc, and sales within Italy went a long way to keeping the dealership doors open.
The 175cc version was introduced in 1956 with more models added to the range in late ’56 and into 1957, with the Sport featuring a Gran Turismo engine and the Rossa Extra that featured an Extra type engine.
The matching numbers ’58 Rossa Extra on offer, is a perfectly original example from a discerning collector of fine Italian machinery, now “thinning the herd”. The superbly stylish exhaust was replaced with a correct OEM part imported from Italy, and the bike was recently fully serviced with new tires, battery and respoked rims with imported-from-Italy Alpina original spokes. The bike runs well and would certainly be a enviable addition to any collection.
